CITY OF MEDJUGORJE
Međugorje is a small place in Bosnia and Herzegovina that is known for the apparition of Our Lady in 1981. years. Međugorje is a city located in southwestern Bosnia and Herzegovina, southwest of Mostar and east of the border with Croatia. The name Medjugorje literally means ‘between the mountains’. It is located 200 meters above sea level and has a mild Mediterranean climate. The city consists of an ethnically homogeneous Croatian population. The city is a part of the municipality of Čitluk, and a geographical part of Herzegovina. Od 1981. it became a popular place of Catholic pilgrimage because of Our Lady of Medjugorje, a series of apparitions of Mary, the mother of Jesus, to six local children, which are said to still be happening today. The place has become popular among pilgrims all over the world, who come to pray for peace of mind, healing as well as prayers for mercy for their loved ones. Međugorje has several chapels, churches and sanctuaries, including Križevac, a place where Our Lady supposedly appears once a week.
Križevac is a hill above Međugorje (520 m) where the parishioners have been since the 16th century. In March 1934, they erected an 8.56 m high reinforced concrete cross that reads: “To Jesus Christ, redeemer of the human race, as a sign of his faith, love and hope, in memory of 1900. anniversary of the Passion of Jesus. The place of the first apparitions of Our Lady, a few hundred meters above the Bijaković hamlet Podbrdo, is today called Apparition Hill. A steep path leads from the houses to the place of the apparition, along which in 1989 bronze reliefs of the joyful and sorrowful mysteries of the rosary (work of Prof. Carmelo Puzzola). On the way to the place of the apparition, a large wooden cross was placed to mark the place where Our Lady called for peace for the first time through Marija Pavlović on the third day of the apparition. At the very place of the apparition, in honor of the 20 anniversary, a statue of Queen Peace was installed, modeled after the one in front of the parish church. Medjugorje also offers a view of incredible natural beauty, which further increases its beauty. Although Medjugorje is a small place, its importance in the world of pilgrimage cannot be overestimated, and that is the reason why rivers of pilgrims visit it every year. The messages attributed to Our Lady of Medjugorje have a large number of followers among Catholics. Medjugorje has become one of the most popular pilgrimage sites for Catholics around the world and has become the third most important place of apparitions in Europe, visited by more than a million people every year. Interesting fact:
Od 1981. to date, more than 30 million visitors have made a pilgrimage to Medjugorje. Behind the church of St. James, there is a bronze statue of the Risen Jesus Christ. This statue is the work of Slovenian sculptor Andrej Ajdič. The miracle of this statue is that tears flow from the knees of the Risen Savior, i.e. a liquid that has the same chemical composition as human tears.
