NATIONAL PARK PAKLENICA
Paklenica National Park is historically the second national park in Croatia. It received the status of a national park back in 1949. year, just a few months after Plitvička jezera National Park. Paklenica National Park covers an area of 96 km2. The highest peaks of this part of the Velebit massif are Vaganski vrh (1757 m) and Sveto brdo (1753 m). It is a mythical place where the mountain plunges into the sea. Since 2017 Paklenica National Park, together with the Northern Velebit National Park and the Hajdučki and Rožanski kukovi nature reserves, was included in the UNESCO list of world heritage sites in Europe, all as part of the common world heritage of 13 countries, which is called “Beech forests in the Carpathians and other areas of Europe “. Thus, 2,031 hectares of forest are covered in the locations of Suva draga – Klimenta and Oglavinovac – Javornik in the core of the Paklenica National Park. The exceptionality of the proposed primeval beech forests in the national parks North Velebit and Paklenica is based on their originality, geographical location, age and size. The most interesting for visitors and at the same time the most impressive are the canyons of Mala and Velika Paklenica, which cut deep into the ramparts of Velebit. Paklenica is visited annually by a large number of mountaineers and recreationists, and the most loyal visitors are climbers, who from spring to autumn can be heard and seen conquering the climbs of Paklenica, especially on the largest Croatian rock, Anića Kuk (712 m). There are also several caves and pits in the national park, the most famous and largest of which are the Manita peć cave above the Velika Paklenica canyon and the Vodarica Cave between the Velika and Mala Paklenica canyons. The national park is networked with numerous hiking trails and mountain shelters – open-type houses. Recently, Paklenica National Park is often in the news, considering that a large number of visitors who do not comply with the rules regarding footwear and clothing as well as personal means of survival must be provided with rescue assistance.

Interesting fact:
Stone cliffs, grottoes that dominate Velebit, forming a fantastic shield – a rampart between continental and coastal Croatia in its southern part of Velebit in Paklenica hid an amazing wealth of forest communities, in which a special place is occupied by forests of black pine (Pinus nigra) whose resin (Paklina) which Paklenica was extracted from them in the past and got its name.
